Uno de los países más jóvenes del mundo, Eritrea finalmente logró su ansiada independencia en 1993 después de una prolongada y sangrienta guerra con Etiopía. La contienda duró más de tres décadas y desató un sufrimiento extremo en la población, ya que esta sintió las mayores repercusiones debido a las terribles sequías y hambrunas que afectaron la región en las décadas de los 70s y 80s. Localizada a lo largo del Mar Rojo en el noreste de África, ha disputado ya tres serios conflictos con sus vecinos principales: Sudán en 1994, Yemén en 1995, y de nuevo Etiopía en 1998. 

One of the world’s youngest countries, Eritrea finally achieved its long desired independence in 1993 after a bloody and lengthy conflict with Ethiopia. The war lasted for more than three decades and leashed extreme suffering on the population as they suffered the brunt the repercussions worsened by acute drought and famine in the 1970s and 80s. Situated along the Red Sea on the northeast African coast, it has already disputed three serious disputes with it principal neighbors: Sudan in 1994, Yemen in 1995, and once again with Ethiopia in 1998.
